Ann Arbor, Michigan
Ann Arbor is a city in the US state of Michigan and the seat of the County of Washtenaw County. It is home to the University of Michigan. Ann Arbor is the most important city in the Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers the entire county. It covers the greater Detroit metropolitan area. At the time of the 2010 census, Ann Arbor had 113,934 residents.
The university has shaped Ann Arbor economically; it employs 30,000 workers, 12,000 of them at the medical center. The city's economy is a centre of high technology, and several companies are attracted to the area due to the university's research and development infrastructure.
Ann Arbor was founded in 1825 and is named after the wife of the founder whose name Ann stands for Bur Oak Tree. The University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837 and the city grew rapidly from the early 20th to the mid-20th centuries. In the 1960s and 1970s, Ann Arbor earned a reputation for center-left politics. The city became the centre of political activism such as opposition to the Vietnam War and support for the legalization of cannabis.
The University of Michigan dominates the city of Ann Arbor and gives the city its distinctive college city character. The university buildings are located in the center of the city, the campus is bordered by State Street to the south of the university and downtown.
In 2000, the Ave Maria School of Law, a Roman Catholic law school founded by Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's Pizza, opened in Northeast Ann Arbor. In 2009, the school moved from Florida to Ave Maria and Thomas M. Cooley Law School bought the former Ave Maria building to use it as a campus branch. Other local colleges and universities include Concordia University of Ann Arbor, a Lutheran liberal arts institution with a campus at the University of Phoenix, and Cleary University, a private business school. Washtenaw Community College is located in neighboring Ann Arbor Township.
The University of Michigan Medical Center, the only teaching hospital in the city, was ranked the first in 2015 by the US News'World Report as the Best Hospitals in Michigan State. Mott Childrens Hospital and Womens Hospital are at their core. The hospital also operates hospital facilities throughout the city. Other major medical centers include a large Department of Veterans Affairs facility in Ann Arbor and Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township near the hospital.
