Washtenaw County is a county in the US state of Michigan. The county is home to Washtenaw.
The county is home to University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, Washtenaw Community College and Concordia University in Ann Arbor. At the 2010 census, the population stood at 344,791. The district includes the Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the Detroit-Warren-Ann Arbor Combined Statistical Area. It was approved by law in 1822 and organized as a county in 1826. It is the seat of the county, located in the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
At the 2010 census, 344,791 people lived in the county. Washtenaw County has the highest proportion of Asian-American residents of any Michigan county. 174) of Washtenaws residents were of German descent, 90% reported English, 84% Irish, 53% Polish, and 50% American descent.
There were 125,327 households, of which 2,920 had children under the age of 18, 4,640 were married couples living together, 930 had a housekeeper with a husband, and 4,120 were non-family. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02. According to the 2000 census, 87.1% spoke English at home, 27% Spanish and 17% Chinese or Mandarin.
The district population was distributed among 2,210 persons under the age of 18, 1,710 persons between the ages of 18 and 24, 3,210 persons between the ages of 25 and 44, 2,060 persons between the ages of 45 and 64 and 810 persons over the age of 65. The median age was 31. For every 100 females, there were 98.90 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 97.10 men.
The median income of a household in the county was $52,990, and the median income of a family was $70,393, up from $59,887 and $80,079, respectively, from 2007 estimates. The district's per capita income was $27,173. Of the 510 families, 11.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 86.0% of those under 18 and 58.0% of those over 65.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 722 square miles (1,870 km2), of which 706 square miles (1,830 km2) is land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (2.3%) is water.
