Novi is a northern suburb of the Detroit metro station and is located 12.9 km northwest of Detroit and 25.7 km northeast of Ann Arbor. Novi was founded in 1832 as a township in the country of Farmington Township. It lies within the boundaries of Novi Township, which includes parts of Northville and Wall Lake. The remaining unincorporated municipalities are only a tiny fraction of the 0.28 km2 surrounding Novi.

The name Novi was proposed by the resident Dr. J. C. Emery at the suggestion of his wife. Residents were looking for a shorter name than Farmington.

Novi was founded in 1969 as a town with the approval of a municipal charter on 18 February 1969 by the voters of the village of Novi. This was the following election: On 20 May 1968, the voters voted with 69.4% yes to 28.3% no (1003 to 1005 votes). The Charter entered into force on 24 February 1969.
