Oakland County has an elected sheriff and law enforcement services are deployed throughout the county by the sheriff. Ten municipalities, three towns and two villages do not have municipal police forces and have contracts with the sheriff for special police services. For example, the city of Rochester Hills does not have a city or Rochester Hills Police Department, but an established sheriff's substation within the city with deputies dedicated to the city. The substation is operated by the Oakland County Sheriff's Department as a Rochester Hills substation.

The sheriff maintains a civil division, a naval division, an alcohol and traffic monitoring unit and an aviation division. The Oakland County sheriff works in the same way as other communities that have chosen not to have their own police departments. This is a cost-effective way for local authorities to provide police services to their citizens.
